Why does the industry say micro drama?

It is the label the business side settled on. Omdia's revenue research, World Screen's union coverage and SAG-AFTRA's own agreement all say micro-drama. The apps call their shows short dramas. China calls them duanju. For the 9:16 shooting side, see vertical dramas. All of these name one format.

How big is the micro-drama market?

Omdia estimates global microdrama revenue at $11 billion in 2025 and forecasts $14 billion by the end of 2026. These are estimates, not audited accounts. Omdia says China makes up much of the total.

Measure Figure Source
Global revenue, 2025 $11 billion Omdia
Global forecast, end of 2026 $14 billion Omdia
US revenue, 2025 About $1.3 billion, roughly $58 million a month in-app Wikipedia (duanju)
Short-drama app in-app revenue, Q1 2026 About $750 million, up 20% on the year Sensor Tower
Downloads, Q1 2026 More than 850 million Sensor Tower
ReelShort, 2025 More than 370 million downloads, $700 million revenue Wikipedia (ReelShort)

Sensor Tower says DramaBox and ReelShort each earned close to $140 million in the first quarter of 2026. Southeast Asia, Latin America and India made up more than three quarters of downloads that quarter. The money still leans on the US, which Wikipedia calls the largest revenue market outside China.

How do micro-drama apps make money?

Mostly by selling episodes one at a time or by the week. Screenwriter John August describes the usual setup: the first few episodes are free, and each one after that needs an in-app purchase. Wikipedia says this paid-unlock model dominates in high-income markets such as the US. China has moved to ad-funded viewing instead, as the duanju page explains.

For a company, this means each title earns at the paywall, episode by episode. For you, it means the price depends on how many locked episodes are left. The prices guide has dated plan prices for each app.

Which companies run the micro-drama apps?

A few app owners commission most English-language series. Each company below runs its own app with its own coin system, per Wikipedia.

Company App Base Launched
Crazy Maple Studio ReelShort Backed by Beijing-based COL Group, office in Shenzhen August 2022
Dianzhong Technology, via StoryMatrix DramaBox Beijing, with a Singapore subsidiary April 2023
Holywater Tech My Drama Ukraine March 2024
SpoonLabs Vigloo Seoul July 2024

Big media and gaming money has followed. Krafton put $86 million into Vigloo in September 2024. Fox Entertainment took a stake in Holywater in October 2025 and committed to produce more than 200 vertical series for it. Store-listing sellers for every app are in who owns short drama apps.

What does a micro drama cost to make?

Little, compared with TV. Wikipedia puts productions in Western markets such as the US at $150,000 to $250,000. That buys a 7 to 10 day shoot producing 50 to 70 or more episodes. Some successful Chinese productions cost as little as $50,000.

A hit can repay that many times over. The Divorced Billionaire Heiress reportedly grossed about $35 million in North America on a budget under $200,000, according to Wikipedia. The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband passed 500 million views. Treat these as the best-documented hits, not an official chart.

How are micro-drama writers paid?

Modestly, by the reports so far. John August's September 2025 roundup quotes one writer paid $22 an hour and another paid about $1,540 a week with benefits. He says the Writers Guild contract does cover this work, so guild members should only take it under a guild deal. One writer he quotes says creative decisions came from data on what was selling.

How are micro-drama actors paid?

It varies widely. Like & Subscribe reported in June 2025 that one non-union lead went from $500 a day in 2023 to $30,000 to $40,000 a month in 2025, after 42 roles. That is one high earner, not a typical rate.

Union work arrived in late 2025. SAG-AFTRA launched its Verticals Agreement in October 2025 for mobile-first productions budgeted under $300,000, World Screen reported. Chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said the agreement "works for the realities of these productions", naming their pace and budgets. The actors directory lists performers fans search for.

What does the business model mean for you?

The apps earn most when you pay at the locked episode without counting what is left. So count first. Check how many episodes remain, compare coins with a timed plan, and note the renewal date if you buy VIP. A recurring plan keeps billing after the series ends.
